Alligator, Catfish

In the South I have come to realize that there are two important things that come first before anything else, food and family. Everything else must wait its turn.

My husband went off shore the Saturday before last and arrived home earlier than expected, I was thrilled of course, but somehow we still haven't been able to see much of each other until last Sunday. I take him to work in the morning and sleep on the ride there and by the time he gets home, I'm normally yelling, "Steve needs a bath tonight, dinner is in the oven, please finish folding the towels OK love you bye!!" and running out the door. I don't get off until 10 or 11 most nights and he is asleep when I get home. Its a bummer right now, but its the best we can do. So, to live up to the Louisiana lifestyle of food and family, that's all we did on my day off last Sunday and let me tell you, it was glorious.
We started off the day bitching at each other..."You go get ready!" "No! You go and get ready!"
"Wow, I'm ready what have you been doing, put Steve's socks on...fine ill do it!"
After, arguing whilst getting the family ready, we finally got in the car and made our way down to Another Broken Egg Cafe. This place is delish and everyone knows it, so that's why there is an hour wait. Luckily, there is a sweet little fountain outside and it was super nice, like 80 degrees nice, outside. Unfortunately, the good weather and sweet little fountain only go so far when your starving and hot and you have a 3 year old climbing all over you. Charlie and I were both about to rip each others hair out and go to McDonald's when our little Broken Egg beeper finally vibrated, signaling a table.
Thank the Lord.
Steve ate little pancakes and bacon, Charlie had a Mardi Gras Omelet and I had Crab Eggs Benedict. Amazing food and amazing what a little meal and some coffee and OJ can do for your mood. After breakfast we were a little more excited about spending the day together. We decided to take a trip out to Houma, La. It took us a little over 2 hours to get there and Steve talked the entire time. Seriously, the kid talks about whatever is in his brain, I honestly don't know if he has an inner dialogue because he talks so much. Sometimes, I have to say, "OK thats great buddy, but lets just be quiet for a few minutes OK?" He says "Alright Mommy." and then starts back up again. What do you do?
The really awesome thing was that we got to see Charlies boat, The Hammerhead, and check it out. Now, when Charlie talks about what he did offshore for 2 weeks, I can sort of understand, instead of just tuning him out and nodding my head in agreement. The not really awesome thing is that I forgot to grab my camera memory card. So no pictures of anything we did for 4 hours, super lame.
We came home and went out to Dons Seafood Hut, also pretty darn good.
I ordered Alligator, which I was not impressed with at all and am really glad that it was just an appetizer. It tasted like bland deep-fried meat...and I remembered to bring my camera too!

This is a fuzzy picture of Alligator and Charlie saying,"You are so embarrasing, put that away. No, you cant take another picture because the lighting is bad. Do not turn the flash on!"
My camera is huge, so its not easy to be stealthy and take pictures of food in a crowded restaurant while other people look at you and/or judge you. I have learned to deal with it, Charlie has not. I'm sure when Steve gets a little older he will realize that not all moms carry around huge professional cameras to document everyday happenings, when he does realize this I'm sure it will embarrass him too. However,  I'm the Mom, so I can do whatever I want. In your face Steve and Charlie.
I ordered Catfish as well. I ordered thinking I needed to try something that was uniquely Louisiana, to tie into the blog. Ive had Catfish once, at Alligator Soul in Everett and it tasted like fried dirt. Not a good thing in your mouth, at all. I was nervous that it would taste disgusting again but decided I needed to suck it up for my faithful 8 followers.

It was amazing, Crab Stuffed Catfish. Oh yeah, so good. Not one hint of dirt and it wasn't deep fried, so I really got the true taste. I now love Catfish, I'm proud to say. Yes this is a terrible picture of the food, blame it on Charlie for not letting me take another picture until we got home, when it was all messed up in the to-go box. I promise it didnt look like this on my plate, when it came out.
I'm so excited that most everything I try here is excellent and doesn't taste like fried dirt.

Food and Family...keep it coming Louisiana...

Because the Berlin's are super stoked for more.

Cheers.
